Sylosis: Monolith

Sylosis

Monolith

Sylosis are a band at the spearhead of the rising British Metal scene. A scene that is taking the world by storm. 'Edge of The Earth' earned its place upon the throne as one of the best British albums this side of Iron Maiden's 'Fear Of The Dark'. It has earned its place as one of the best Metal albums of all time and definitely the best of Sylosis to date. So how did "the Shredding from Reading" approach a follow up to such a titan of Metal? Well it came a mere 1 year later in the form of Monolith.
With their third full length album, the Metal apple hasn't fallen far from the Sylosis tree. The signature throat bloodying screams, melodic singing and earth shattering thrash riffs are all present here. Monolith stands up against the Sylosis album catalogue with great confidence. Tracks such as 'The River' and 'What Dwells Within' just go to show that Sylosis are able to blend melodic, slower pace with Slayer like thrash speed. As a whole there is a mosaic of styles, including the more prominent thrash and death Metal, to detectable black Metal. This is a sign of a maturing band that is able to add a safe level of diversity to their music. This is obvious on tracks such as 'Monolith' and 'Out From Below'.
Among this collection of explosive ear assaulting songs there are a few that jump the queue in the line for the number one spot. In particular 'Born Anew', for its million mph brutality. Another being 'All Is Not Well' for being the most catchy song is the history of Sylosis.
Whether you are a fan of Sylosis or just Metal in general, Monolith has something for everyone and nothing that will disappoint. Clearly Sylosis know where they are and where they want to be.There is no doubt that there will be great things to come for this band. With albums like these, how could they ever be anything less?

  • Overall album rating: 9/10
  • Three Sylosis tracks to hear: 'All Is Not Well', 'Out From Below', 'Awakening'
  • Other bands you may like: Trivium, Lamb Of God, Rise To Remain

EXODUS: PERSONA NON GRATA

EXODUS: PERSONA NON GRATA         The Thrash Metal hierarchy has long been constructed around the mainstream success of the American "Big Four", dwarfing their peers outside of the clique with their mass popularity and stratospheric record sales. Thanks to bands such as Exodus, Testament and Overkill, a revolution has begun. The most recent releases from those bands comprising the Big Four have been good at best, while the latest albums from these previously mentioned outsiders have been breathtakingly excellent.    Persona Non Grata is a crushingly heavy slab of solid Thrash Metal. Gary Holt and fellow guitarist Lee Altus whip up a veritable storm of crunchy, Thrashing, whiplash-inducing riffs from start to finish. A superhuman barrage of drum battery is unleashed by Tom Hunting, accompanied by Jack Gibson's booming, thundering and raking bass notes. All the while Steve Souza sings, screams and snarls like a rabid and possessed vocal maestro....
