Asking Alexandria: From Death To Destiny
Lets be honest, until now "Asking Alexandria" has been universally used as a negative term to describe everything that Metal music should not be about. Electronic bleeps and bloops coupled with pop-choruses and coated with guitar tabs that rarely leave the 0 and 1 end of the fret board. However, despite residing in this undefinable shadowy region of the music world, Asking Alexandria managed to amass a vast fan base (mainly consisting of "Emo" teenagers) and became one of the most prominent and notorious figures in modern music. The release of From Death To Destiny will see the entire Metal world we know picked up and thrown around like a rag-doll. This is an album that changes the game, forever and for the best.
The first question on everybody's mind is probably going to be, "Are the infuriating electro noises still there?" The answer to that question is a yes, if you listen really carefully at select moments within certain songs. So with 95% of the electronic and synthesizer noises gone, what else could potentially hold this album back from receiving the credit it deserves? Well front-man Danny Worsnop's vocals certainly can't be a problem. His voice has come a very long way since Asking Alexandria's last full-length album. Taking on a far more gruff style, that can vary from furious guttural roars to fresh clean singing. The musicianship demonstrated on From Death To Destiny is completely incomparable to that seen on Reckless And Relentless. The quantity of breakdowns has been halved, leaving an abundance of opportunities for these musicians to showcase their own talents and capabilities.
The songs themselves are drenched in charisma and individuality, then covered in a strong Metallic shell. Songs such as opening track "Don't Pray For Me", "The Death Of Me" and Howard Jones guested "Until The End", are some of the heaviest songs of Asking Alexandria's career. Those songs in particular are at times quite reminiscent of Five Finger Death Punch or newer Fear Factory. Other standouts include the Hard-Rock soul searcher that is "Moving On", and the raw power demonstrated on "Killing Me" will act as something of a wake up call to those ignorant enough to not give Asking Alexandria a chance due to past experiences. The battering riff fortresses of "Believe" and "Creature" also do their bit to make sure people realize, this is a Metal album.
At the end of the day, all Asking Alexandria can do is to try and make the best albums they can. Of their catalogue so far, From Death To Destiny is the best album this band has released. Those who refuse to give them a second chance are quite frankly, missing out big time. Existing fans may actually be deterred from liking this album due to the fact it is bursting with real talent and depth. Whatever side of the fence you reside, From Death To Destiny is most deserved of a chance.
With both Bring me The Horizon and now Asking Alexandria emerging from underneath the gloomy emo fringes and becoming solid metal acts, who will die-hard Metal-Heads pick on now?
