NAPALM DEATH:
APEX PREDATOR - EASY MEAT
A lot has changed since the Grindcore pioneering days of Scum. Some would even argue that for Napalm Death, the only constant has been their name, which of course isn't the case. The energy and determination to continually push to new musical heights that forged their many classic albums, remains as strong as ever here. When coupled with a world plagued by social and political issues, with humanitarian disasters commonplace and worldwide reluctance to dirty hands and fix the problems, you are left with all the fuel that Napalm Death need to dish out another Metallic wake up call.
Apex Predator - Easy Meat, is without a doubt, one of Napalm Death's greatest releases to date. Incorporating every style they have explored over the years, as well as several new angles to keep fans on their toes, this album is a masterpiece of extremity. The title track opens up the album, with a Slipknot-esque chanting and screaming reminder of this bands motivations. A thought provoking track, but a memorable and brilliant one none-the-less. "Smash A Single Digit" follows and sets the tone for the rest of Apex Predator, short and smashing, this is a heavy track plucked straight out of their late 1980's style and polished down with a modern finish. Tracks like "Stubborn Stains" and "Timeless Flogging", are dripping with all the groove and excellence you would expect from Napalm Death, proving just how true to their own style the band really are.
"Dear Slum Landlord" is one of the most unexpected highlights of this album. With a more classic punk style and an interesting vocal approach, it is a refreshing little number. Lead single, "Cesspits" and the absolutely crushing, "Stunt Your Growth", keep the extremity and iconic heaviness going in perfect fashion, while "Hierarchies" keeps things fresh with a relatively clean chorus and a blistering solo. "Adversarial/ Copulating Snakes" rounds Apex Predator off in perfect form. Heavy, fast, powerful and melodic, executed with excellent musicianship and clear focus, it is a genuine reflection of the entire album.
Still as relevant and exciting as they were almost three decades ago, Napalm Death are undeniably one of the most important bands of the entire genre, and with releases as good as Apex Predator - Easy Meat, it is obvious why.
