SIX FEET UNDER: TORMENT

SIX FEET UNDER: TORMENT

Six Feet Under are certainly no strangers to Death-Metal. Since forming in the early 1990's, they have released an impressive 12  full-length albums, excluding the four cover albums. Considering this, it is amazing that a band this well progressed in their career is still able to create barbaric music of exceptionally high quality, while noticeably embracing musical creativity and evolution, and staying true to their own identity and the Death-Metal scene that they themselves helped to build and grow into the ever flourishing eco-system that we know and love today.
In case you were wondering, or worried, Torment is definitely and indisputably Death-Metal. Right from the face-slashing first notes of opening track, "Sacrificial Kill", to the pounding closure of "Roots Of Evil", frontman and mastermind, Chris Barnes leads his ensemble through wave after wave of heavy, groove-ridden Death-Metal, with his unique strain of incredible yet harrowing growls. For evidence of this, check out tracks such as "The Separation Of Flesh From Bone" and "In The Process Of Decomposing", in which Chris showcases his legendary bark on top form, with vocal passages that you will no doubt end up tearing a vocal chord attempting to replicate.
It is a futile effort trying to compare Torment to any of its predecessors, even in comparison to 2015's Crypt Of The Devil, Torment is a completely different beast altogether. Overall, the sound of Torment is extremely uncomplicated and highly streamlined, being heavily groove based with incredible headbang inducing rhythms in the classic Old-school Death-Metal style, which is in no way an insult, it simply means that Torment is almost guaranteed to please fans of legends such as Obituary and Jungle Rot. Songs such as the brilliant, "Obsidian" and the sinister buildings of "Skeletons", provide much welcomed displays of basic technicality, while "The Separation Of Flesh From Bone", "Knife Through The Skull" and "Bloody Underwear" ensure that the gore-obsessed legacy of Chris Barnes and Six Feet Under is kept very much alive (or undead?), with walls of throbbing groovy riffs, machine precision drumming and throat-shredding gutturals.
In conclusion, if you are a fan of Six Feet Under, Old-school Death-Metal, or music that will cause you to spontaneously windmill and headbang until you give yourself severe soft-tissue injuries, then Torment is well worth your time and money.

However, it should also highlight just how much can change within a 365 day stretch, and just how much Metal music can terraform within that time. So lets hope 2014 lives up to the achievements of 2013. Bring on the...

BEAST IN BLACK: DARK CONNECTION

BEAST IN BLACK:  DARK CONNECTION     Bombastic, heavy, wild and fun, Dark Connection is everything that any obliging listener can expect to hear from Finnish whippersnappers Beast In Black.      Saturated with synths, electronics and plenty of twiddling guitars, the album has a very European (or more specifically Scandinavian) Pop vibe, more prevalent here than on Beast In Black's previous efforts. That said, there is no shortage of cracking riffs, slamming drums and impressive vocals.     Kicking off in dramatic fashion, " Blade Runner " offers up an seizure inducing blur of riffs and crazed keys. Sounding like a disco injected Judas Priest, " Bella Donna " is bizzare yet undeniably infectious and catchy. With a great sing-along chorus, crunchy Metallic riffs and an abundance of synths and keys, " Highway To Mars " is another groovy staple. Offering a little more heaviness, " Hardcore " pounds and thunders along like a softer Sab...
