SUFFOCATION: ..OF THE DARK LIGHT
Suffocation are one of the most important bands in Death-Metal. Period. Accredited by a majority of bands and fans of the sub-genre as being the Godfathers of brutal Death-Metal and Slam, Suffocation have forged an impressive legacy by creating the biggest, best and most brutally barbaric music around, perfectly demonstrated on their latest slab of mastery, "..Of The Dark Light".
Suffocation have come a long way since their legendary debut album, "Effigy Of The Forgotten", however the band has clearly lost none of their passion for creating extreme music, or their hunger to redefine the limits, which made their debut so memorable and defining. "Of The Dark Light" shows a band at the top of their game, although still strongly rooted in the style that they pioneered back in the 1990's, this album is one of the most current and exciting releases to be unleashed upon the brutal Death-Metal scene in years.
"Of The Dark Light" is packed with crushing, slamming riffs and exceptional machine-gun drumming, resulting in tracks such as the breakdown wielding opening track "Clarity Through Deprivation", "Return To The Abyss" and title track, "..Of The Dark Light", which are not only memorable for their meaty chugging riff work, but also for the absence of over complication and excessive technicality, which seems to more often confuse listeners than provide them with music to enjoy. That said, fans of the technical Death-Metal approach which was far more prominent on previous release, "Pinnacle Of Bedlam" will not be unsatisfied here, tracks such as ,"The Violation" and, "Caught Between Two Worlds" provide listeners with a very satisfying dose of intricacy and complexity. Alongside new members in the fold, vocalist Frank Mullen presents his highly distinctive death-growls on spectacularly savage form throughout the album, putting most modern extreme Metal vocalists to shame. For proof of this, check out the utterly breathtaking and eye-watering, "The Warmth Within The Dark".
Following the Suffocation tradition, the album closes with a spectacular re-recording of, "Epitaph Of The Credulous" from 1993's "Breeding The Spawn", which seamlessly fits in alongside the rest of the album and closes the curtain in old-school slamming style.
Overall, the musicianship displayed on "Of The Dark Light" is impeccable. "Of The Dark Light" is an all killer, no filler affair, which might just be the best release of Suffocation's career.
