KORPSE: NONE SO BRUTAL EDITION
Dutch brutality purveyors Korpse are a household name within the Slam and Brutal Death-Metal world after earning massive credibility and notoriety with their sublime 2016 full-length album, Unethical. Although it was their second album that propelled them into massive scene wide popularity and saw the name Korpse become a noun for all things Brutal and Slamming, it was their first album that really built the career foundations strong and took the Slam world by storm.
Korpse's None So Brutal Edition, originally released as a self-titled effort in 2014, is an honest, unpretentious and unchauvinistic album. Korpse's debut full-length is undeniably Slamming, but is also far closer in style to the bombastic Brutal Death-Metal sounds of bands such as Vomit The Soul and Face Of Oblivion.
Although only a mere 24 minutes long, None So Brutal Edition packs more of a consistent, debilitating punch than most Brutal Slamming Death-Metal albums, even those twice as long. Opening track and gun-fire plagued sample based intro, "By All Means Necessary" is a turbulent, full-throttle charge of savage Slamming, characterised by intensely groovy riffage and mild technical guitar work, warming up your ears and giving a taster of what the rest of the album has in store.
The second track, "Persuasion" defines Korpse's tactful melding of Slam rhythms and more intricate Brutal Death-Metal perfectly. There is no over emphasising just how brilliant the guitar work displayed on this track in particular is, accompanied by clattering bass tones these riffs are expertly crafted and as hard hitting as they are highly memorable.
"School's Out Shootout" is more of a Slam staple in comparison to much of the rest of the album, carrying a hint of Kraanium style swagger and Waking The Cadaver-esque powerful bass heavy, stomping, towering breakdown riffs which blend seamlessly into following track, "Devil's Breath".
Blastbeating uncontrollably out from the ether, "Valuable Skills" showcases utter drumming carnage of the most talented and brutal kind, authentically crushing thick riffs and no small measure of highly infectious, Katalepsy style grooving Slammage.
"Fireworks" is a short and beautiful display of musical warfare in itself, but it is the following track "More Funerals To Come" which explodes far louder and brighter, delivered at noticeably great speed and stuffed with intricately screeching guitar notes, monstrous bass driven breakdowns and of course, severe snare drum punishment.
Grand finale, "Complications" is fitting considering it's name, as it is by far the most attentively technical and detailed track on the album. As is the way with most of the tracks, the closing song darts between being immensely fast and menacingly yet delightfully sludgy, achieving the desired effect of making the track both interesting and slightly overwhelming.
Overall, the None So Brutal Edition re-release gives Korpse's debut the full justice it deserves. The album is not just another one of the many Slam albums spewed out every year, nor is it another generic Brutal Death-Metal effort, instead it is a wonderful combination of the two styles, highly enjoyable and mercilessly heavy. If you like your Brutal Slamming Death-Metal savage, fast and loaded with bestial guttural vocals then this album is essential.
