SHURIKEN TORTURE: CADAVERIC DEFILEMENT OF DEPRAVITY

SHURIKEN TORTURE: CADAVERIC DEFILEMENT OF DEPRAVITY

If generic, repetitive, unchallenging Slam is your thing, then this is the release for you. Cadaveric Defilement Of Depravity, the debut EP from Chilean Slam duo Shuriken Torture, is a 6 song stack of primitive, very basic yet well executed and strangely entertaining aggression. The whole EP follows the orthodox Slam path strictly, fitting in comfortably with; Inhuman Entity, Slamophiliac and Sex Murder Art in terms of sound and style. That said, Shuriken Torture's debut release is nothing if not an entertaining and worthy listen.   With drum machines in full swing and sludgy riffs aplenty, opening track "Penetrated And Dissected" is as generic and essentially uninventive as it gets, although it does deliver a handful of solid riffs and blastbeats, which could easily have been lifted straight from an early Kraanium track.   "Necrorgy" has a touch more creativity and a hint of originality about it, armed with some formidable bass heavy Slams, note worthy guitar work and admirable gutturals. The disturbingly yet very typically Slam titled, "Bloody Rape Bondage" is undeniably a notch more brutal than the previous tracks, unleashing a blizzard of blastbeats upon unready and unsuspecting ears, as well as some genuinely crushing grooves.    "Impaled Master Dominatrix" takes the Slams up to another level of intensity, along with some more intricately worked notes and hyper speed Slams, which are prolonged to usher in the EP's highlight track, "Prollapse Anal Collapse". This track does have a distinctive charm about it, not just because it is highly reminiscent of Korpse and Embryectomy, but also because it's furious old-school heavy rhythmic riffs, menacing bass tones and a memorable building-leveling Slam breakdown.    Closing track and most questionably titled track of the EP, "Spanking My Cocks, Ejaculating Blood", is far more generic and dull in comparison to it's predecessors, showing not much more than some insane drumming and some pleasant riffing.      Overall, Cadaveric Defilement Of Depravity is a solid Slam effort and a sturdy debut release. The EP does show a fair amount of promise, with some good and honest moments, but unfortunately is unlikely to leave a lasting impression, or help Shuriken Torture to achieve Slam stardom. Here's hoping that Cadaveric Defilement Of Depravity's follow up is as sharp and deadly as Shuriken Torture's name suggests.

EXODUS: PERSONA NON GRATA

EXODUS: PERSONA NON GRATA         The Thrash Metal hierarchy has long been constructed around the mainstream success of the American "Big Four", dwarfing their peers outside of the clique with their mass popularity and stratospheric record sales. Thanks to bands such as Exodus, Testament and Overkill, a revolution has begun. The most recent releases from those bands comprising the Big Four have been good at best, while the latest albums from these previously mentioned outsiders have been breathtakingly excellent.    Persona Non Grata is a crushingly heavy slab of solid Thrash Metal. Gary Holt and fellow guitarist Lee Altus whip up a veritable storm of crunchy, Thrashing, whiplash-inducing riffs from start to finish. A superhuman barrage of drum battery is unleashed by Tom Hunting, accompanied by Jack Gibson's booming, thundering and raking bass notes. All the while Steve Souza sings, screams and snarls like a rabid and possessed vocal maestro....

NO NONSENSE METAL REVIEWS: THE TOP 10 ALBUMS OF 2021

NO NONSENSE METAL REVIEWS: THE TOP 10 ALBUMS OF 2021     Despite lockdowns, travel restrictions and the cancellation of normality as a result of an ever present global pandemic, 2021 has been a very healthy year for heavy music. With the cancellation and indefinite postponement of tours, festivals and live music in general, bands and artists have been forced to explore alternative avenues and express their artistic visions and passions in other ways. The down time away from the road has left bands with schedules empty enough to write and record new material, some of which has proven to be exceptionally strong new albums, EPs and compilations. The phenomena of the "lockdown live album" as well as live streaming events and virtual concerts have also become a commonplace staple in many band's discography, showing defiantly that COVID-19 and the consequent restrictions enforced will never suffocate the breath of creativity or shroud the light of the soul. Making the be...
