KATAPLEXIA: THE RISE OF THE UNKNOWN
If you have been waiting 11 years for another full-length from Finland based bruisers Kataplexia, then every second of that wait has been well worth it.
Stretching to an eye-watering 30 minutes, this album is a roller-coaster of audio brutality.
Introducing the album, "Profanities Of Artificial Incubation" does have a fairly prominent, Disavowed-esque air about it, but that does not overshadow the fact that these riffs are colossal, the gutturals are raw and the low end and bass drops will crush your skull.

If you like your Brutal Death-Metal to have a little more of a classic feel to it, then "The Approaching Of The Aftermath" and "Inverted Telepathy" will make you feel right at home. Both of these tracks shamelessly lean towards the menacing pace and primal punch of more traditional Death-Metal, from the likes of Sinister and Cannibal Corpse. In fact, "Inverted Telepathy" is a very strong contender for being the album highlight, dishing up a delicious platter of early Suffocation worship and monstrous, intoxicating riffs, all rounded off beautifully in Kataplexia's own unique way.
Irrespective of the musical comparisons, Kataplexia do have a standout sound and are undeniably very skilled musicians capable of making brutal tunes suited to all tastes; just take the technical wizardry of "The Autonomous Intelligence", or the seismic Slam and blastbeat-fests of "The Birth Of The Unknown" and "Genetic Intervention", which incidentally contains the grooviest and weightiest Slamming section of the whole album.
In conclusion, The Rise Of The Unknown is a thoroughly enjoyable listen and to be honest, is something very special indeed. Kataplexia have done a fine job of intricately weaving a vast range of brutal styles throughout the album, from proggy technical flairs to savage slams, however the albums is still largely rooted in the traditional Death-Metal and Brutal Death-Metal ways. The beauty of this lean and mean album is that it manages to be utterly barbaric and totally crushing without being over the top and unnecessarily complicated, trading bells and whistles for an arsenal of blastbeats and rattling bass. This is Brutal Death-Metal done right.
