IRON SAVIOR: SKYCREST

 IRON SAVIOR: SKYCREST
Skycrest, the latest release from Germany's Iron Savior, is a superb accomplishment of traditional Heavy Metal and Power Metal fusion. Executed with masterful musicianship, crisp and clean production and great song writing, Skycrest sounds as epic as it does Metallic.
From start to finish Skycrest is a veritable feast of Heavy Metal treats, crammed with delectable crunchy riffs, pummelling steam train drumming and powerful vocals. Following the gentle intro of "The Guardian", title track "Skycrest" is the perfect example of just what Iron Savior can do, unleashing a torrent of massive raging riffs and showcasing frontman Piet Sielck's incredible vocal prowess.
Blowing you away with breakneck drumming and huge harmonies, "Our Time Has Come" also boasts a massive sing along chorus, guaranteed to satisfy any Power Metal hungry listener. "Hellbreaker" displays some interesting intricate leads while still remaining groovy and melodic, as well as containing mandatory incredible guitar solos and some rather fun futuristic explosions and laser sound effects.
Galloping riffs, twin guitar harmonies and thick bass tones aplenty, "Souleater" is a groovy traditional Heavy Metal track that shows an element of Judas Priest inspiration, an influence prevalent throughout Skycrest. The slightly more intricate and technical, almost progressively structured "Welcome To The New World" is a fast and furious assault of shredding riffs and driving drums, with an immensely catchy chorus thrown in for good measure.
The pace, infectious choruses, groovy riffs and blistering solos continue through epic Power Metal track, "There Can Be Only One", before the dark and gloomy "Silver Bullet" turns things up a notch with yet more crazy drumming and intense heavy grooves. In an AC/DC style, obligatory Heavy Metal tribute song "Raise The Flag" is an entertaining and anthemic Rock N' Roll party tune. With a sombre and melancholic tone, "End Of The Rainbow" is a powerful Metal epic, complete with more great guitar leads, Heavy Metal melody and an absolutely colossal chorus.
Slowing things down virtually to a stop, ballad track "Ease Your Pain" is most notable for bassist and songwritter Jan-Sören Eckert's amazing and emotive vocal performance, before closing track "Ode To The Brave" kicks in with a full speed ahead Metal assault. With a scent of Blind Guardian's style of epic Metal thrown in to the mix, this spectacular finale closes the curtains with twin guitars, some of the crunchiest riffs on the album and blistering solos, all presented at full speed.
Overall, Skycrest is a wonderful working of Heavy/ Power Metal. Start to finish it is a highly enjoyable and wonderful sounding album that is certain to please any fans of the traditional Metal ways.

EXODUS: PERSONA NON GRATA

EXODUS: PERSONA NON GRATA         The Thrash Metal hierarchy has long been constructed around the mainstream success of the American "Big Four", dwarfing their peers outside of the clique with their mass popularity and stratospheric record sales. Thanks to bands such as Exodus, Testament and Overkill, a revolution has begun. The most recent releases from those bands comprising the Big Four have been good at best, while the latest albums from these previously mentioned outsiders have been breathtakingly excellent.    Persona Non Grata is a crushingly heavy slab of solid Thrash Metal. Gary Holt and fellow guitarist Lee Altus whip up a veritable storm of crunchy, Thrashing, whiplash-inducing riffs from start to finish. A superhuman barrage of drum battery is unleashed by Tom Hunting, accompanied by Jack Gibson's booming, thundering and raking bass notes. All the while Steve Souza sings, screams and snarls like a rabid and possessed vocal maestro....

NO NONSENSE METAL REVIEWS: THE TOP 10 ALBUMS OF 2021

NO NONSENSE METAL REVIEWS: THE TOP 10 ALBUMS OF 2021     Despite lockdowns, travel restrictions and the cancellation of normality as a result of an ever present global pandemic, 2021 has been a very healthy year for heavy music. With the cancellation and indefinite postponement of tours, festivals and live music in general, bands and artists have been forced to explore alternative avenues and express their artistic visions and passions in other ways. The down time away from the road has left bands with schedules empty enough to write and record new material, some of which has proven to be exceptionally strong new albums, EPs and compilations. The phenomena of the "lockdown live album" as well as live streaming events and virtual concerts have also become a commonplace staple in many band's discography, showing defiantly that COVID-19 and the consequent restrictions enforced will never suffocate the breath of creativity or shroud the light of the soul. Making the be...
