MASSACRE: RESURGENCE
MASSACRE: RESURGENCE
Like the walking dead, Massacre just keep coming back time after time. Refusing to stay down, this band simply won't die. To survive, Massacre takes on a new form every ascension, this time they have re-emerged as the Kam Lee band, with the legendary vocalist being the most consistent and regular member of the band over the years and through the numerous reformations.
The Massacre that we are faced with here on Resurgence could be considered as something of a Death-Metal supergroup. Comprising the band alongside Kam Lee; we have Mike Borders on bass guitar whom was previously a member of the band for short spell in the mid 1980's, alongside Jonny Pettersson of Wombbath (and countless other bands and projects) and Rogga Johansson of Paganizer (and possibly even more bands and projects than Jonny) on guitars, Brynjar Helgetun on drums, and Memoriam's resident riff-lord Scott Fairfax providing lead guitar. United this band of talented musicians form a diabolical team of Old-School Death-Metal masterminds, whose combined talents have forged a subgenre masterwork.
Short and putrefyingly sweet, Resurgence is just over 40 minutes of highly enjoyable and hard hitting Death-Metal. Right from the off "Eldritch Prophecy" offers up plenty of atmosphere with a sinister intro, before sledgehammer blows of bludgeoning riffs are dealt in an ode to the signature style of Bolt Thrower and Kam Lee's crackling guttural vocals fade into audible view through the musical murk.
The blows keep coming as "Ruins Of R'Lyeh" unleashes incredibly distorted and utterly nasty chugging riffs, which is juxtaposed by sinister Autopsy type mid-paced Death-Doom passages. The darkblackened edge to "Innsmouth Strain" is a notable contrast to the furious Old-School whiplash-inducing pace of the hemorrhaging "Whisperer In Darkness". Gunshots and chainsaws, the obligatory Death-Metal samples provide the intro to "Book Of The Dead", a nasty number showcasing bombastic drumming and face-melting riffing. Made all the more memorable with vocal contributions from Benediction's Dave Ingram, "Into The Far-Off Void" is a rumbling and rolling Death-Metal bulldozer.
Shredding riffs and plenty of speedy chugging can be enjoyed on "Servants Of Discord", a hard and fast Old-School gem. Scott's distinct guitar tones can be heard opening "Fate Of The Elder Gods", a Benediction leaning number oozing with nasty riffs. A Six Feet Under-esque sound is present on "Spawn Of The Succubus", with fluctuating vocal styles, effective pace changes and monumental groove concealed within those crushing riffs.
In rotting remembrance "Return Of The Corpsegrinder" pays homage to the origins of the Death-Metal scene with this furious closing track, with a sound so classically rooted it could easily have just crawled straight out of Scream Bloody Gore.
Overall, Resurgence certainly doesn't bring anything new to the Old-School Death-Metal table, but it does however give this style of musical extremity a fetid fresh burst of life. With excellent musicians and refreshingly well written songs Massacre have created a monster and a very strong, concise and enjoyable one at that.

EXODUS: PERSONA NON GRATA The Thrash Metal hierarchy has long been constructed around the mainstream success of the American "Big Four", dwarfing their peers outside of the clique with their mass popularity and stratospheric record sales. Thanks to bands such as Exodus, Testament and Overkill, a revolution has begun. The most recent releases from those bands comprising the Big Four have been good at best, while the latest albums from these previously mentioned outsiders have been breathtakingly excellent. Persona Non Grata is a crushingly heavy slab of solid Thrash Metal. Gary Holt and fellow guitarist Lee Altus whip up a veritable storm of crunchy, Thrashing, whiplash-inducing riffs from start to finish. A superhuman barrage of drum battery is unleashed by Tom Hunting, accompanied by Jack Gibson's booming, thundering and raking bass notes. All the while Steve Souza sings, screams and snarls like a rabid and possessed vocal maestro....
NO NONSENSE METAL REVIEWS: THE TOP 10 ALBUMS OF 2021 Despite lockdowns, travel restrictions and the cancellation of normality as a result of an ever present global pandemic, 2021 has been a very healthy year for heavy music. With the cancellation and indefinite postponement of tours, festivals and live music in general, bands and artists have been forced to explore alternative avenues and express their artistic visions and passions in other ways. The down time away from the road has left bands with schedules empty enough to write and record new material, some of which has proven to be exceptionally strong new albums, EPs and compilations. The phenomena of the "lockdown live album" as well as live streaming events and virtual concerts have also become a commonplace staple in many band's discography, showing defiantly that COVID-19 and the consequent restrictions enforced will never suffocate the breath of creativity or shroud the light of the soul. Making the be...
