5 Of The Best DEATH METAL albums EVER.

5 Of The Best DEATH METAL albums EVER.

Some Metal albums are universally loved by all Metal fans. Trying to choose just 5 albums to be "The greatest of all time" would be an impossible task. Breaking Metal down into its many sub-genres and then picking the 5 best albums from each one is a slightly more approachable task. So first category to face judgement shall be one of the most difficult, Death Metal.
Although considered the ugliest and most gruesome of all sub-genres, it has without a doubt spat out some genuinely brilliant bands and albums. So here is the list of the 5 Death Metal albums (Although there are many more worthy albums out there) I believe are some of "The greatest of all time".

1: CHTHONIC
   TAKASAGO ARMY
Takasago Army is Chthonic's sixth studio album, and is widely regarded as being their finest work to date. The album itself is shrouded by the story of the Takasago Army during WWII. These were Taiwanese volunteers enlisted in the Japanese Imperial army. So now you can see why such a subject would mean as much as it does to a band who hail from Taiwan.
The album itself is a furious and relentless masterpiece spread across 10 tracks. As with previous Chthonic releases, traditional Chinese and far-Eastern instruments such as the Erhu, have been incorporated into the songs to give a unique sound. Songs such as "Takao" and "Southern Cross" are truly amazing songs that are nothing short of brilliant. But the highlight of the album has to be the fantastic and moving "Broken Jade". Such powerful lyrics and strong variation in vocal style, coupled with the merciless driving drums and brain battering riffs, this album is most deserved of its place as one of the greatest Metal albums of all time.

2: MORBID ANGEL
     ALTARS OF MADNESS
This may not have been as successful as the later Covenant, But numbers of albums sold isn't everything. After all, Justin Bieber has probably sold more albums than Megadeth, But does that really mean "Baby" is a better song than "Holy Wars, The Punishment Due"? Of course not. If you disagree then please exit this page. Only Metal heads remaining? Good.
Morbid Angel might be classed as a Death Metal band, but Thrash is also copiously present. Which is of course no bad thing. But what is it exactly about this album that is so brilliant? To understand, just listen to gems such as "Immortal Rites" and die-hard classics like "Suffocation".
Altars Of Madness is a Death Metal classic. Its sound is unlike that of any other band of its time. This unique sound and style is detectable in many different bands who have spawned since. This album is very much to blame for the eruption of Death and Black Metal from Scandinavia in the 1990's. So just where is this sound (only describable as being the product of blending Sepultura's "Morbid Visions", Kreator's "Pleasure To Kill" and Venom's "Black Metal", mixing them together and pouring it in your ears) came from, no-one knows. What we do know is that we Metal heads like it. A lot. And its a sound that's survived over 20 years and will continue to do so for many, many more to come.

3: CANNIBAL CORPSE

   KILL
It is almost impossible to get much heavier than Cannibal Corpse. Many bands have tried, and at most they have achieved equal heaviness. As all Metal-heads will know, heavy isn't everything. If a perfect unity between heavy and quality can be obtained, then the responsible artist will have discovered the secret to a vast fan base and a successful career.
Kill, contains that perfect balance between corpse-grinding brutal heaviness, Thrash speed and Death-Metal screams. The album as a whole is flawless, which explains why most Cannibal Corpse fans regard this album as the best George Fisher era album. If not the best album of the bands entire career. Kill delivered such Death-Metal classics as "Make Them Suffer" and Thrash inspired "Death Walking Terror", making it an essential component to any Metal-Heads collection.

4: BEHEMOTH
   ZOS KIA CULTUS
Whether you like Behemoth or not, they are without a doubt one of the biggest names in the Death Metal world. Front-man Nergal has earned himself much publicity beyond the realms of his band. You may have become aware of Nergal through one of his many triumphs of the last few years. Such as being struck down with, and then defeating Leukemia. Or perhaps his victory back home in Poland resulting in his right to perform his unique strain of Satanic Death Metal.
Musically, Behemoth are pretty much unrivaled. Even in their early days of playing Black Metal, they were an unstoppable outfit. Even today, that Black Metal blood still flows through their veins, as can be heard in Zos Kia Cultus. Compared to previous releases Thelema.6 and  Satanica, Zos Kia Cultus is far less wildly frenzied, but far more groove influenced. That doesn't mean that the unique frenzy that surrounds Death-Metal isn't present here. It actually means that as a whole, Zos Kia Cultus takes bits from all different breeds of Metal and uses them to forge a satanic masterpiece. The resulting creation is a series of soul storming songs such as "As Above So Below" and "Horns Ov Baphomet".

5: OBITUARY
   THE END COMPLETE
"Classic" might be a word that is thrown around a lot these days, But "Classic" is a word that definitely applies to The End Complete.
Obituary are a Death Metal band. No-one denies that. But it was this Death-Metal band that basically created (or certainly went a long way to altering and building on) Doom-Metal. This is clear on The End Complete. The long chugging, Doom laden riffs are spilling over the edge of this album. The slow Death style instrumental is matched by deep, dark vocals. If your a long time member of the Metal underground resistance then you are probably already well acquainted with gems such as "I'm In Pain". For those who are fairly new to the beautiful world of Metal, songs like "The End Complete" will be sure to make these legends your new favorite band.

EXODUS: PERSONA NON GRATA

EXODUS: PERSONA NON GRATA         The Thrash Metal hierarchy has long been constructed around the mainstream success of the American "Big Four", dwarfing their peers outside of the clique with their mass popularity and stratospheric record sales. Thanks to bands such as Exodus, Testament and Overkill, a revolution has begun. The most recent releases from those bands comprising the Big Four have been good at best, while the latest albums from these previously mentioned outsiders have been breathtakingly excellent.    Persona Non Grata is a crushingly heavy slab of solid Thrash Metal. Gary Holt and fellow guitarist Lee Altus whip up a veritable storm of crunchy, Thrashing, whiplash-inducing riffs from start to finish. A superhuman barrage of drum battery is unleashed by Tom Hunting, accompanied by Jack Gibson's booming, thundering and raking bass notes. All the while Steve Souza sings, screams and snarls like a rabid and possessed vocal maestro....

MASSACRE: RESURGENCE

MASSACRE: RESURGENCE      Like the walking dead, Massacre just keep coming back time after time. Refusing to stay down, this band simply won't die. To survive, Massacre takes on a new form every ascension, this time they have re-emerged as the Kam Lee band, with the legendary vocalist being the most consistent and regular member of the band over the years and through the numerous reformations.   The Massacre that we are faced with here on Resurgence could be considered as something of a Death-Metal supergroup. Comprising the band alongside Kam Lee; we have Mike Borders on bass guitar whom was previously a member of the band for short spell in the mid 1980's, alongside Jonny Pettersson of Wombbath (and countless other bands and projects) and Rogga Johansson of Paganizer (and possibly even more bands and projects than Jonny) on guitars, Brynjar Helgetun on drums, and Memoriam's resident riff-lord Scott Fairfax providing lead guitar. United this band of talented ...

NO NONSENSE METAL REVIEWS: THE TOP 10 ALBUMS OF 2021

NO NONSENSE METAL REVIEWS: THE TOP 10 ALBUMS OF 2021     Despite lockdowns, travel restrictions and the cancellation of normality as a result of an ever present global pandemic, 2021 has been a very healthy year for heavy music. With the cancellation and indefinite postponement of tours, festivals and live music in general, bands and artists have been forced to explore alternative avenues and express their artistic visions and passions in other ways. The down time away from the road has left bands with schedules empty enough to write and record new material, some of which has proven to be exceptionally strong new albums, EPs and compilations. The phenomena of the "lockdown live album" as well as live streaming events and virtual concerts have also become a commonplace staple in many band's discography, showing defiantly that COVID-19 and the consequent restrictions enforced will never suffocate the breath of creativity or shroud the light of the soul. Making the be...
