Ancient Ascendant Interview: No Nonsense Metal Interviews

NNMR: No Nonsense Metal Interviews
ANCIENT ASCENDANT
If there is one thing that the Metal-Music world has an abundance of, its brilliant young bands. Bands with enormous amounts of talent, ready to be unleashed upon the unsuspecting universe. Ancient Ascendant, are one of those bands, and they are a band destined for great success.
Ancient Ascendant, have released one full-length album and 2 EP's, including 2012's magnificent, "Into The Dark", and are currently crafting new material for their second full-length offering. Ancient Ascendant, have played countless events, including a triumphant appearance at Bloodstock Festival 2012, and have supported one of the biggest bands in extreme Metal.
No Nonsense Metal Reviews got in touch with Ancient Ascendant's own Alan Webb, to try and uncover what is happening with one of Metal's greatest rising stars.

NNMR: How are things going for the band right now?

Webb: "Things are great. Outwardly I guess we appear to be pretty quiet after our busy period at the start of the year with the couple of tours we did, but we're currently busy getting new songs together which is of course an enjoyable but long process."

NNMR: You recently supported Enslaved, alongside Winterfylleth on a European tour. How was that experience and how did the tour go?

Webb: "Unfortunately we didn't do the entire Euro tour, only the UK/Ireland dates. It was an amazing time for us though, a great experience. It's always a little strange playing and touring alongside a band you've been a fan of for years and years, but our experience of it has always been that these legendary characters that you look up to are just the same as the rest of us. They're just regular guys who love music and want to have a laugh. We especially had a laugh with the Winterfylleth guys, the most humble, kind and nice black metal band I'm sure your ever likely to meet."

NNMR: How is touring looking for you guys for the rest of the year?

Webb: "We don't really have any big plans for gigs in the near future as we're concentrating on writing at the moment. The only show we have confirmed is at The Underworld, Camden on Sat 20th which is charity show in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust. We Might see about doing a festival or two later in the year, but for now, its writing, writing and more writing."

NNMR: Will there be another Ancient Ascendant release in the near future?

Webb: "As I said, we're writing for a new release at the moment. It will be our second full length album, following on in style from our 2012 EP "Into The Dark". Our current schedule is to record near the end of the year and release it sometime in the beginning of 2014."

NNMR: Where do you get the inspiration to write and create new material?

Webb: "Everyone in the band has an input in the writing, and all 4 of us have very eclectic music tastes, so our inspiration can come from all over the place. Everything from stoner rock to country, electro to prog rock, we put it through the groovy black/death metal machine and see what comes out. We're at a good point at the moment where we don't really have any boundaries; we can just do whatever we want, which is very refreshing as a songwriter."

NNMR: Ancient Ascendant has been labelled as a Death-Metal band. How would you describe the sound and style of the music you make?

Webb: "We certainly began life as a death metal band, but I think we've developed a lot since then and now we're playing something a bit different. There's certainly still a lot of death metal in there, but we have quite a strong leaning towards black metal sound and ethic now. I think giving music a specific pigeon hole doesn't do anyone any favours, as everyone has a different expectation of what that genre name means. We've been told before that we're not death metal, and I'm sure we'll be told we're not black metal either, but it doesn't matter at all. We play groovy extreme metal/rock whatever name people want to give it is up to them."

NNMR: Any final points you would like to make or anything you would like to say to your fans?

Webb: "I'd just like to thank anyone who's come to see us at a gig and/or bought our music/merch, you are literally keeping us going, and we hope you'll enjoy our new album when it comes out! It's shaping up to be something quite special."

EXODUS: PERSONA NON GRATA

EXODUS: PERSONA NON GRATA         The Thrash Metal hierarchy has long been constructed around the mainstream success of the American "Big Four", dwarfing their peers outside of the clique with their mass popularity and stratospheric record sales. Thanks to bands such as Exodus, Testament and Overkill, a revolution has begun. The most recent releases from those bands comprising the Big Four have been good at best, while the latest albums from these previously mentioned outsiders have been breathtakingly excellent.    Persona Non Grata is a crushingly heavy slab of solid Thrash Metal. Gary Holt and fellow guitarist Lee Altus whip up a veritable storm of crunchy, Thrashing, whiplash-inducing riffs from start to finish. A superhuman barrage of drum battery is unleashed by Tom Hunting, accompanied by Jack Gibson's booming, thundering and raking bass notes. All the while Steve Souza sings, screams and snarls like a rabid and possessed vocal maestro....

MASSACRE: RESURGENCE

MASSACRE: RESURGENCE      Like the walking dead, Massacre just keep coming back time after time. Refusing to stay down, this band simply won't die. To survive, Massacre takes on a new form every ascension, this time they have re-emerged as the Kam Lee band, with the legendary vocalist being the most consistent and regular member of the band over the years and through the numerous reformations.   The Massacre that we are faced with here on Resurgence could be considered as something of a Death-Metal supergroup. Comprising the band alongside Kam Lee; we have Mike Borders on bass guitar whom was previously a member of the band for short spell in the mid 1980's, alongside Jonny Pettersson of Wombbath (and countless other bands and projects) and Rogga Johansson of Paganizer (and possibly even more bands and projects than Jonny) on guitars, Brynjar Helgetun on drums, and Memoriam's resident riff-lord Scott Fairfax providing lead guitar. United this band of talented ...

NO NONSENSE METAL REVIEWS: THE TOP 10 ALBUMS OF 2021

NO NONSENSE METAL REVIEWS: THE TOP 10 ALBUMS OF 2021     Despite lockdowns, travel restrictions and the cancellation of normality as a result of an ever present global pandemic, 2021 has been a very healthy year for heavy music. With the cancellation and indefinite postponement of tours, festivals and live music in general, bands and artists have been forced to explore alternative avenues and express their artistic visions and passions in other ways. The down time away from the road has left bands with schedules empty enough to write and record new material, some of which has proven to be exceptionally strong new albums, EPs and compilations. The phenomena of the "lockdown live album" as well as live streaming events and virtual concerts have also become a commonplace staple in many band's discography, showing defiantly that COVID-19 and the consequent restrictions enforced will never suffocate the breath of creativity or shroud the light of the soul. Making the be...
