Carcass: Surgical Steel

CARCASS
SURGICAL STEEL
When news first broke that the twice sub-genre pioneering Metal titans, Carcass, would be returning with their first brand new album in 17 years, expectation and anticipation was running understandably high. After all, 17 years is a long time to be away from anything. In the case of the music industry, 17 years away could see you landing in an entirely different world from the one you previously experienced. As for actually making music, 17 years is plenty of time to forget how to do the very thing thing that you once knew so well. Its lucky for the Metal community then that Carcass haven't forgotten a thing about how to create life affirming music. If anything, it seems that Carcass have only gotten better with time.
Surgical Steel incorporates far more Metallic styles than any individual previous Carcass album. For example, the appropriately named, "Thrasher's Abattoir", carries a hammering Grind-entwined sound, laid upon a strong Thrash foundation. Tracks such as "A Congealed Clot Of Blood" and "The Master Butcher's Apron", contain a plethora of fantastically placed Metallic implements. These attention drawing sections include; chugging breakdowns, sharp solos and slow bass-driven respites. The Melodic-Death crunches of the Heartwork era provide a sturdy structure throughout, but most prominently on tracks such as awkwardly titled, "Noncompliance To ASTM F899-12 Standard" and the utterly breathtaking, "The Granulating Dark Satanic Mills". These neck-breaking masterpieces act as a rather subtle reminder of just why it is that Carcass are accredited with helping to create this very style of Metal-Music. Meanwhile, "Unfit For Human Consumption" and lead-single, "Captive Bolt Pistol", offer up far more than just putrefied and brutal lyrics, both leaning more toward the Symphonies Of Sickness days in terms of speed and morbidity.
Vocally, Jeff Walker is in the finest form of his life. laying down disease ridden lyrics without breaking his stride. He has the remarkable ability to snarl and growl his way through songs, without making the lyrics completely inaudible. Even if your a fan of extreme vocals, being able to understand the lyrics makes the songs slightly more individual and improves their identity.
Carcass certainly can't be accused of cheating or deceiving here. Surgical Steel presents a very lean, stripped back, yet distinctly Carcass sound. Which is hardly surprising really, after all, this group of Metal-Masters know how to produce time withstanding music without all the smoke and mirrors of the technological age.
No-one could have possibly asked for a greater reward for their patience. Whether you've been waiting 17 years or just a few months, Surgical Steel has proved to be very much worth the wait. This album is the sound of a musically tight and dedicated band. So what ever Carcass's next step may be, Surgical Steel will certainly keep the Metal community satisfied for a considerable amount of time to come.

EXODUS: PERSONA NON GRATA

EXODUS: PERSONA NON GRATA         The Thrash Metal hierarchy has long been constructed around the mainstream success of the American "Big Four", dwarfing their peers outside of the clique with their mass popularity and stratospheric record sales. Thanks to bands such as Exodus, Testament and Overkill, a revolution has begun. The most recent releases from those bands comprising the Big Four have been good at best, while the latest albums from these previously mentioned outsiders have been breathtakingly excellent.    Persona Non Grata is a crushingly heavy slab of solid Thrash Metal. Gary Holt and fellow guitarist Lee Altus whip up a veritable storm of crunchy, Thrashing, whiplash-inducing riffs from start to finish. A superhuman barrage of drum battery is unleashed by Tom Hunting, accompanied by Jack Gibson's booming, thundering and raking bass notes. All the while Steve Souza sings, screams and snarls like a rabid and possessed vocal maestro....

MASSACRE: RESURGENCE

MASSACRE: RESURGENCE      Like the walking dead, Massacre just keep coming back time after time. Refusing to stay down, this band simply won't die. To survive, Massacre takes on a new form every ascension, this time they have re-emerged as the Kam Lee band, with the legendary vocalist being the most consistent and regular member of the band over the years and through the numerous reformations.   The Massacre that we are faced with here on Resurgence could be considered as something of a Death-Metal supergroup. Comprising the band alongside Kam Lee; we have Mike Borders on bass guitar whom was previously a member of the band for short spell in the mid 1980's, alongside Jonny Pettersson of Wombbath (and countless other bands and projects) and Rogga Johansson of Paganizer (and possibly even more bands and projects than Jonny) on guitars, Brynjar Helgetun on drums, and Memoriam's resident riff-lord Scott Fairfax providing lead guitar. United this band of talented ...

NO NONSENSE METAL REVIEWS: THE TOP 10 ALBUMS OF 2021

NO NONSENSE METAL REVIEWS: THE TOP 10 ALBUMS OF 2021     Despite lockdowns, travel restrictions and the cancellation of normality as a result of an ever present global pandemic, 2021 has been a very healthy year for heavy music. With the cancellation and indefinite postponement of tours, festivals and live music in general, bands and artists have been forced to explore alternative avenues and express their artistic visions and passions in other ways. The down time away from the road has left bands with schedules empty enough to write and record new material, some of which has proven to be exceptionally strong new albums, EPs and compilations. The phenomena of the "lockdown live album" as well as live streaming events and virtual concerts have also become a commonplace staple in many band's discography, showing defiantly that COVID-19 and the consequent restrictions enforced will never suffocate the breath of creativity or shroud the light of the soul. Making the be...
