CANNIBAL CORPSE: VIOLENCE UNIMAGINED

 CANNIBAL CORPSE: VIOLENCE UNIMAGINED

Violence Unimagined, the fifteenth full length release from renowned Death-Metal pioneers, Cannibal Corpse is precisely what you would expect from a band as experienced and as far into their career as they are. The album is unapologetically fast, furious and formidable, it is also one of their greatest triumphs to date.
Steeped in their signature instantly identifiable sound, Violence Unimagined is a blistering assault of concentrated Death-Metal, beautifully produced and presented by latest recruit, Eric Rutan. If any fans did have any unfounded concerns that having the mastermind from fellow Death-Metal veterans Hate Eternal in the band would somehow force them to deviate from the classic Cannibal Corpse sound that we all know and love, then they can rest assured. Having Eric in the band wielding the guitar and in the producers seat has not significantly impacted the bands style, if anything the addition of another excellent musician has only aided the band in creating an incredible piece of highly authentic and original audio savagery.
Throwing all conventions out the window and dispensing with any kind of introduction whatsoever, opening track "Murderous Rampage" lurches straight for the jugular and does not miss. This is utterly barbaric Old-School Death-Metal, from the very opening moments right through the closing notes, Violence Unimagined is absurdly heavy in the best possible way. Menacingly slow savage riffs and rumbling bass notes abound, the totally crushing "Necrogenic Ressurection" keeps pace and delivers the goods.
"Inhumane Harvest" is another prime vessel for titanic grooving riffs, with just the right amount of intricate musical variety to be interesting and grip the senses without being unnecessarily technical or Progressive. The colossal stomping riffs continue throughout "Condemnation Contagion", while the strangely groovy "Surround, Kill, Devour" provides you with the closest you will get to a sing along chorus here.
Unleashing a tirade of blast beats and driving drums, blistering solos and thrashing riffs, "Ritual Annihilation" is a superb track oozing with Cannibal Corpse's distinct and disturbing style. The remarkable speed and intensity continues throughout "Follow The Blood" and "Bound And Burned", both of which house a succession of deliciously crunchy riffs, monstrous drumming barrages and led by Corpsegrinder's terrifying vocal abilities. Winning the best riffs award, "Slowly Sawn" boasts some of Cannibal Corpse's all time thickest, most intoxicating and monolithic guitar work with an ominously stalking sound and gradual build up, it expertly delivered and with great effect.
Closing the album with the short yet brutal punch of "Overtorture", before dragging you through the swampy tones of the pummelling "Cerements Of The Flayed", a finale guaranteed to squeeze any remaining ounces of strength from the listener, with masterful machine gun drumming and mesmerising riffs.
Overall, Violence Unimagined is an excellent album. This is Cannibal Corpse doing what they do best, playing hard and fast Old-School brutal Death-Metal and doing it better than most other bands around. For a band that appears to get better with age, this album is quite possibly their best to date.

EXODUS: PERSONA NON GRATA

EXODUS: PERSONA NON GRATA         The Thrash Metal hierarchy has long been constructed around the mainstream success of the American "Big Four", dwarfing their peers outside of the clique with their mass popularity and stratospheric record sales. Thanks to bands such as Exodus, Testament and Overkill, a revolution has begun. The most recent releases from those bands comprising the Big Four have been good at best, while the latest albums from these previously mentioned outsiders have been breathtakingly excellent.    Persona Non Grata is a crushingly heavy slab of solid Thrash Metal. Gary Holt and fellow guitarist Lee Altus whip up a veritable storm of crunchy, Thrashing, whiplash-inducing riffs from start to finish. A superhuman barrage of drum battery is unleashed by Tom Hunting, accompanied by Jack Gibson's booming, thundering and raking bass notes. All the while Steve Souza sings, screams and snarls like a rabid and possessed vocal maestro....

MASSACRE: RESURGENCE

MASSACRE: RESURGENCE      Like the walking dead, Massacre just keep coming back time after time. Refusing to stay down, this band simply won't die. To survive, Massacre takes on a new form every ascension, this time they have re-emerged as the Kam Lee band, with the legendary vocalist being the most consistent and regular member of the band over the years and through the numerous reformations.   The Massacre that we are faced with here on Resurgence could be considered as something of a Death-Metal supergroup. Comprising the band alongside Kam Lee; we have Mike Borders on bass guitar whom was previously a member of the band for short spell in the mid 1980's, alongside Jonny Pettersson of Wombbath (and countless other bands and projects) and Rogga Johansson of Paganizer (and possibly even more bands and projects than Jonny) on guitars, Brynjar Helgetun on drums, and Memoriam's resident riff-lord Scott Fairfax providing lead guitar. United this band of talented ...

NO NONSENSE METAL REVIEWS: THE TOP 10 ALBUMS OF 2021

NO NONSENSE METAL REVIEWS: THE TOP 10 ALBUMS OF 2021     Despite lockdowns, travel restrictions and the cancellation of normality as a result of an ever present global pandemic, 2021 has been a very healthy year for heavy music. With the cancellation and indefinite postponement of tours, festivals and live music in general, bands and artists have been forced to explore alternative avenues and express their artistic visions and passions in other ways. The down time away from the road has left bands with schedules empty enough to write and record new material, some of which has proven to be exceptionally strong new albums, EPs and compilations. The phenomena of the "lockdown live album" as well as live streaming events and virtual concerts have also become a commonplace staple in many band's discography, showing defiantly that COVID-19 and the consequent restrictions enforced will never suffocate the breath of creativity or shroud the light of the soul. Making the be...
